Is Social Distancing Enough? (Synthesis)

Social Distancing was new thing that has been used in the past but was brought into the light again this year. Social Distancing has been found to date back to around 1919 where sociologist Emory Bogardus founded the idea after “The Red Summer”. There has been founding that it was used before then but nothing as significant.

Many people have started to wonder. Is Social Distancing enough to prevent the spread of COVID-19 or is there something more that I can be doing? COVID is found to be spread when someone is within 6 feet, and is unmasked of someone that is carrying the virus for a prolonged amount of time. The CDC says that, “Spread happens when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and droplets from their mouth or nose are launched into the air and land in the mouths or noses of people nearby.”

We know that Social Distancing is good to try to maintain but still, why is the rule six feet? Another source says that, six feet is the average distance that respiratory droplets from a sneeze or cough travel before being settled and are no longer going to be inhaled by others. Six feet is there to help minimize you getting the virus even if someone you walk by may have it and you and/or them may not know about it.

Obviously there are other ways to prevent getting the virus as well. Masks have become a widely spread mandatory thing. Masks are able to decrease the amount of droplets leaving your nose and mouth when coughing, sneezing, etc.

Masks and Social Distancing is only a small part of what might seem like a new life to many. A lot has changed and a lot has had to be adjusted in our lives but we can only hope that we come out of this more knowledgeable and if this were to come our way again, we would know how to handle it.
